Salmon

Prince of Wales Island is home to all five species of Pacific salmon, providing anglers with diverse and exciting fishing opportunities throughout the season.

King Salmon (Chinook)

  • Peak Season: Late June to July

  • Details: Known for their size (up to 50+ pounds) and powerful fight, these prized fish are targeted using trolling or mooching techniques in saltwater.

Sockeye Salmon (Red)

  • Season: June to July

  • Details: Most commonly caught in rivers, Sockeye can occasionally be hooked while trolling in the ocean.

Coho Salmon (Silver)

  • Season: July to October

  • Peak: Late July to September

  • Details: Coho are known for their aggressive strikes and acrobatic battles. They gather in ocean schools and bays as they prepare to spawn, making them a favorite among anglers.

Chum Salmon (Dog)

  • Season: June to mid-August

  • Details: Often caught in rivers, Chum Salmon can also be targeted in saltwater with similar techniques to Sockeye.

Pink Salmon (Humpback or Humpy)

  • Season: July to August

  • Details: The most abundant salmon species, Pink Salmon return in massive numbers during even-numbered years. These smaller fish (3-5 pounds) provide fast-paced action.

Bottom Fish & Shellfish

The waters surrounding Prince of Wales Island are home to a variety of bottom fish and shellfish species. From the mighty halibut to the spot shrimp, these treasures of the deep offer incredible fishing opportunities throughout the year.

Halibut

  • Season: May to September

  • Details: Renowned for their size and taste, halibut dwell in deep ocean waters and are often caught using bait like herring or squid.

Lingcod

  • Season: Typically May 16 to November 30 (varies by area)

Rockfish

  • Season: Year-round

  • Details: Found in rocky areas, species like black rockfish provide year-round fishing excitement and are a favorite for their steady availability.

Spot Shrimp
